Go Air
Go First was a Mumbai-based low-cost airline launched as GoAir. The Indian corporate group Wadia Group owns it. It began operations on November 4, 2005, with an all-economy fleet of Airbus A320s.
In 2021, the airline planned an IPO to raise ₹36 billion (US$450 million). The airline claimed that Pratt & Whitney engines used on its entire fleet of A320 aircraft were unavailable in 2023, affecting operations. On May 3 2023, the airline halted operations and applied for voluntary insolvency with the National Company Law Tribunal.
History of Go Air
Indian industrialist Nusli Wadia’s son Jehangir created GoAir in 2005. Wadia Group owns the airline. On November 4, 2005, GoAir began flying from Mumbai to Ahmedabad with an Airbus A320. The airline started with one plane to four locations, including Goa and Coimbatore, and planned to add 36 by 2008. By the end of 2008, the airline planned to operate 11 aircraft and serve new North East and South Indian locations. In June 2008, rising gasoline prices led GoAir to stop flights.
Brit Airways wanted to purchase a share in the airline in January 2009. GoAir and SpiceJet considered merging in November 2009, but nothing came of it. Kingfisher Airlines’ bankruptcy became GoAir India’s sixth largest airline in April 2012. In 2013, the airline hired JP Morgan to find investors.
In 2016, IndiGo and SpiceJet had a bigger market share, fleet size, and destinations than the airline, which has grown slowly. In India’s challenging aviation climate, the airline plans to focus on sustaining profitability rather than grabbing market share and expanding routes and fleet size. It has an 8% market share as the fifth largest carrier in the country as of February 2016. IPO is planned for the airline in 2016. After receiving its 20th aircraft in June 2016, the airline may fly internationally.
The first flight to Phuket from Delhi by GoAir on October 11, 2018, made it the sixth Indian local airline to fly abroad. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, GoAir cancelled all foreign flights on March 17, 2020. On May 13, 2021, GoAir became Go First. The airline aimed to raise ₹36 billion (US$450 million) through an IPO in 2021. Operational concerns forced flight cancellations in 2023.
The airline blamed Pratt & Whitney PW1000G engine supply chain concerns for its whole A320neo fleet to be affected. Subsequently, the airline filed for voluntary insolvency resolution before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLAT) on May 2 2023. The airline sued Pratt & Whitney in federal court to enforce an arbitral ruling ordering engine delivery. This was denied by Pratt & Whitney.
The airline was refused interim directives from NCLAT to continue operations and prohibitions on unfavourable regulatory action. Lack of rental payments led leasing firms to seize the airline’s jets. Creditors authorized ₹425 crore (US$53 million) temporary finance on June 26, 2023, to restart the airline pending board approval.
In August 2023, the airline requested ₹100 crore (US$13 million) in emergency finance to stay solvent. Go First’s insolvency resolution procedure was extended by 60 days on February 13, 2024, allowing possible investors to make ideas for the carrier’s resurrection. Go First received its second and last extension. SpiceJet and others invested in the airline.
In February 2024, SpiceJet’s Ajay Singh and Nishant Pitti presented a ₹600 crore (US$75 million) proposal for GoFirst. Go First plans to monetize two land parcels in Mumbai to compensate for total dues of ₹11,463 crores (US$1.4 billion) from merchants and lessors. The offer stipulates that Nishant Pitti will own 60% and Ajay Singh the balance. They’ll need 15 planes to start. Sky One FZE, from Sharjah, bid for the airline.
GoAir Corporate affairs
The airline is based in Worli, Mumbai’s Wadia International Centre. Jehangir Wadia was the airline’s managing director from its founding until 2021. In April 2016, airline CEO Wolfgang Prock-Schauer became joint Managing Director. In August 2020, Kaushik Khona became CEO. Khona left CEO in November 2023.
GoAir Destinations
In March 2020, Go First operated a network of 39 destinations – 29 domestic and ten international with 325 daily flights. In June 2016, GoAir became eligible for international operations. The airline launched its maiden international operations on October 11 2018, from Delhi to Phuket

GoAir Fleet development
Go First ordered 72 Airbus A320neo aircraft worth ₹32,400 crore (US$4.1 billion) in June 2011. Starting in 2016, 12–15 aircraft were delivered annually. In December 2015, Airbus announced that technical concerns would delay delivery by three months, bringing them to the second quarter of 2015–16. On June 1, 2016, Go First acquired their first A320neo.
Go First signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus in July 2016 for 72 A320neo aircraft for US$7.7 billion, potentially giving it 144 orders. This transaction was announced at Farnborough. The airline suspended operations in 2023 with 26 aircraft and 28 grounded owing to Pratt & Whitney engine troubles.
GoAir Services
Go First is a budget airline that sells in-flight meals and publishes Go-getter, an in-flight magazine. Go First’s Go Business service costs more but offers more legroom, free meals, a baggage allowance, and priority boarding. Go Club, the airline’s frequent flyer program offered lounge access and free Go Business upgrades in 2011. The new membership ended in February 2014.
