InterGlobe Enterprises’ Rahul Bhatia and Rakesh Gangwal, a US-based Indian expatriate, launched IndiGo in 2006. Gangwal’s Virginia-based Caelum Investments owned 47.88% of IndiGo, while InterGlobe owned 51.12%. With intentions to launch in mid-2006, IndiGo ordered 100 Airbus A320-200s in June 2005. Nearly a year after ordering, IndiGo received its first aircraft on July 28, 2006.
New Delhi to Imphal via Guwahati service began on August 4, 2006. In 2007, the airline added nine planes to its six in 2006. IndiGo overtook Air India as India’s third largest airline in December 2010, after Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways, with a 17.3% passenger market share.
