History of Indigo Airlines

InterGlobe Enterprises’ Rahul Bhatia and Rakesh Gangwal, a US-based Indian expatriate, launched IndiGo in 2006. Gangwal’s Virginia-based Caelum Investments owned 47.88% of IndiGo, while InterGlobe owned 51.12%. With intentions to launch in mid-2006, IndiGo ordered 100 Airbus A320-200s in June 2005. Nearly a year after ordering, IndiGo received its first aircraft on July 28, 2006.

New Delhi to Imphal via Guwahati service began on August 4, 2006. In 2007, the airline added nine planes to its six in 2006. IndiGo overtook Air India as India’s third largest airline in December 2010, after Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways, with a 17.3% passenger market share. In 2011, IndiGo ordered 180 Airbus A320s for $15 billion. After five years, the airline was allowed international flights in January 2011. The DGCA highlighted concerns about passenger safety during fast growth in December 2011.

Shortly after six years, IndiGo received its 50th aircraft in February 2012. For the quarter ended March 2012, IndiGo became India’s second-largest airline by passenger market share and most profitable. Six years after its launch, IndiGo surpassed Jet Airways as India’s largest airline on August 17, 2012.

IndiGo ran second in Asia’s low-cost carrier growth in January 2013 behind Lion Air. In February 2013, IndiGo announced a subsidiary to launch low-cost regional flights after the Civil Aviation Ministry limited it to five aircraft. IndiGo later told the ministry it would need four additional aircraft, bringing its total to nine in 2013. The second-largest low-cost carrier in Asia by seats flown is IndiGo as of March 2014.

IndiGo completed the largest single Airbus purchase ever in August 2015, ordering 250 A320neos for $27 billion. On October 19, 2015, IndiGo launched its ₹3,018 crore (about ₹36 billion or US$440 million in 2023) IPO, which opened on October 27, 2015.
